Spirit
In late fall of 2010 we saw this girl in the Sheriff’s Dept. firing range which is next to our shelter. It was obvious that one of her back legs was hurt, but we could not get close to her. She ignored us when we called to her and left if we tried to approach her. During the winter we left out food for her along the edge of the woods and hoped against hope that she was the one eating it. She never ate while we were there.
We began moving the food closer to the shelter and one morning in early spring of 2011 she came to eat while we were there and didn’t run when we approached her. She let out a low rumble which meant ‘not now.’ Literally the next morning she turned herself in. She was standing by the front door when we got there. She let us leash her and bring her into the shelter and she loved everyone from that exact moment.
She had to have her leg amputated and was treated for heartworms. She was roaming around in the Vet’s office the day of her amputation. She never stopped wagging her tail or giving kisses through either of these procedures. She had some severe complications when she was spayed and we thought we might lose her after all she went through. She just fought through it and gave kisses and tail wags right on.
Being ready for adoption, she was listed on the adoption web sites. There she found her perfect forever family. She was adopted by an amazing couple from Minnesota and even got to go sight seeing on her way home. In her last update she was getting ready to go to school to be a Therapy Dog. What a perfect life for a perfect dog aptly named SPIRIT.
