Facebook can be many things to people, sometimes even annoying. For our Ellie, it was a lifeline. An ODCHS volunteer happened to see a post, coincidentally, by a friend and supporter of the shelter. She was trying to ‘catch’ a dog that had been injured. The ‘injury’ was that something or someone had cut off this dog’s foot. Knowing she needed immediate medical care, these two ladies joined forces and managed to coax the scared doggy from under a house that she was using for a safe place. They contacted ODCHS while en route to the vet. Circumstances were in line so that ODCHS would be able to take responsibility for her. Thanks to these ladies getting Ellie to the vet in time, she was evaluated, a plan of treatment was decided, and it was determined that she could make a full recovery. After a few days of making sure she had no lingering infection, her leg was amputated. Her entire leg was removed so her recovery would be easier. Losing the whole leg makes it easier for the dog to adapt, rather than if a portion of the leg is left. She stayed at the vet for a few more days-then to the shelter she came. In spite of being frightened, she has been eating and gaining her weight back. Her leg is healing nicely. She has even overcome an obstacle-the steps from her kennel to the yard! With some patience and encouragement, she mustered her courage and did it! Up and down. After the first time, it was a done deal! She is still getting to know, and become comfortable with all of us. She is going through her obstacles with flying colors. It won’t be long until this girl is ready for her new life. A good one. She is literally taking it step by step...
UPDATE**Ellie continued to improve and soon after she was ready, found her forever home. Since then, her family has shared that she fit right in! They never thought of her as any less, they just continue to love her more.
