Schatzi
A truck pulled up to the shelter at closing time. The people in the truck “wanted to do something” with their dog. We heard them tell of how people in the home had not treated this little dog very nicely-she had an obvious scar on her side where someone had ‘tried to cut her open’. And then, there she was, with the sweetest little face, looking up. She obviously had the mange. The conversation continued. “Oh yeah, she’s pregnant.” That was on Thursday. Three days later, on Sunday, she gave birth at the shelter to eight puppies. They were all healthy. As they grew, it was obvious, that they, also, were affected by the mange. She could not be treated while nursing. In spite of her condition, she endured and was an excellent mother. (All her babies were treated and adopted.) After her babies had begun to eat on their own, Schatzi (name=sweetheart) was also treated and responded well. She wore ‘pajamas’ at times on her walks to protect her delicate skin while healing. She also discovered that she loved to ride! She would go for her weekend rides with a volunteer. She also enjoyed her time playing in the yard. She did live up to her name! Schatzi was adopted and is now living a peaceful life, in a loving home, with her mom and a furry sibling...
